Throughout the day, Hong Kong bakeries are simply at every corner, even one block can have a few. Tai Cheong is famous one in Wan Chai. With an attractive food point of sales poster, I decided to give it a try.
In broken Chinese I uttered, “one egg custard tart and one pineapple crusted bun.”
With a piping hot custard, the tart (~$1.30 USD) delivered but lacked a flaky crust found at Golden Bakery in Chinatown San Francisco. As a promotional item, the pineapple crusted bun was only (~$.15 USD).
In restaurant business, we call this a lost leader. With an attractive sign, the pineapple crusted bun only serves to lure the customer into the bakery. It worked.
Thus far, I have not food any remarkable food.
Remarkable defined as something worth talking about.
Compared to San Francisco, Hong Kong lacks many foods. A Mexican burrito is nowhere to be found or a great Italian sandwich. Most of the foods revolve around Japanese such as ramen and sushi.
In addition, a mile long list of all the different types of Chinese cuisine. Favorite snacks that I have seen are fried fish skin.
