Each time I eat a meal, I am learning to take better food photographs.
After taking over thousands of photos, I find that lighting is the major key. In general, using flash is just not a good idea since it makes the food look unnatural. Instead, turn the ISO to the highest level without compromising the pixel quality.
Also, I suggest adjust the white balance to match the lighting.

I’m trying to get better at food photography. I should learn more about using the ISO and white balance settings (my camera can do this).
It seems that my food photo ops are more often at night. Admittedly, I tend to fall fall back on using the flash. And yes, as you point out, the flash is a compromise on the color.
